Serbia will complete about one-third of the expansion project of its only gas storage facility in Banatski Dvor in October, BalkanEngineer.com learned from a media release by the state-owned company Srbijagas. The excavation and equipping of the first four of the planned 12 new wells is progressing successfully — three of them are already fully completed and are expected to be ready for gas delivery as early as October this year.

The remaining eight wells will begin drilling in the spring and are expected to be completed by spring 2027. The expansion project will increase the storage capacity from the current 450,000,000 m3 to 750,000,000 m3 , and daily production will be increased to between 10,000,000 and 12,000,000 m3 of gas. This increase in capacity is expected to lead to higher imports in the summer and more stable supplies during the winter season.
The expansion of Banatski Dvor began in April this year with an investment of 145 million euro, in cooperation with Russian operator Gazprom, which owns 51% of the facility. The remaining 49% is owned by Srbijagas, according to data from the Serbian Trade Register Agency. The country consumes about 3 billion cubic meters of gas annually and imports more than 90% of its needs, with gas stored not only in Banatski Dvor but also in leased facilities in Hungary.
