Construction of the new train station at Tirana International Airport is entering the next phase after Albanian Railways completed the contractor selection process. The company Hastoçi has been selected to prepare the detailed engineering and architectural design and to construct the station building for nearly 81 million Albanian lek, or about 880,000 euros, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Albanian Daily News.

The procedure was temporarily suspended following a complaint from one of the six bidders. Albania’s Public Procurement Commission rejected the objection in September and allowed Albanian Railways to proceed with the award. The contract is a “design-build” model, meaning the selected contractor will be responsible for both the detailed design and the construction of the building.

The new station, also known as Rinas Station, will be part of the Tirana–Durrës–Tirana International Airport rail link. The project calls for the building to be located on a site covering approximately 6,287 m², with the structure itself occupying about 260 m². Plans include waiting areas, ticket counters and vending machines, service areas, and security systems. Pedestrian walkways and sidewalks, a parking lot, and separate areas for buses, taxis, and cars will be developed around the station.

The technical specifications also include a “green station” concept. The building is to utilize natural lighting and energy-efficient solutions, including photovoltaic panels and a rainwater harvesting system. Thus, the new facility will be constructed as part of the overall modernization of the railway infrastructure along this route.

According to the current schedule, passenger service on the Tirana–Durrës–Tirana Airport route is set to begin by the end of 2027. This timeline does not include the separate section of approximately 4 km through which the railway line must be extended to reach the capital itself.
