The airport operator SOF Connect launched its large-scale project for transforming Sofia Airport into the first 5-star regional airport in Europe, BalkanEngineer.com learned from a company’s announcement. This happened with the official presentation of the future Terminal 3’s conceptual design.
The project for the construction of the new Terminal 3 is a step towards the modernization of Sofia Airport, for which 256 million euro are planned. According to the CEO of SOF Connect, Jesus Caballero, the operator’s ambition is to turn the strategic transport infrastructure in the Bulgarian capital into a world-class reference with the highest sustainability standards.
The conceptual design of Terminal 3 is inspired by the natural landscapes in Bulgaria, featuring mountains, colours and silhouettes. The new terminal will be connected to the current Terminal 2 and will cover an area of 65 000 m2. The innovative facility will combine modern architecture with contemporary materials. The design is an exclusive work of the Bulgarian architectural company IPA in cooperation with the internationally proven engineering companies in the aviation industry Egis and 1PAX.
