In a decision that draws attention to the whole energy sector, the European Commission (EC) announced that it is postponing the implementation of the strategic elements of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The measure, also known as a “carbon tax,” was to come into effect in 2026 and would place a carbon fee on imports of products made in countries without equivalent climate policies. This decision caused a reaction in industrial circles, which we are commenting on with Smart Energy Group, operating in Bulgaria under the Smart Solar brand and one of the leaders in the field of renewable energy sources and engineering solutions in Europe.

Regulation (EU) 2023/956, adopted in 2023, has a clear goal – to prevent so-called carbon leakage and protect European manufacturers who operate under stricter environmental standards. But as often happens, reality caught up with intentions – high inflation, energy insecurity and fluctuating global trade forced a temporary “time out”.

Among the industries affected are steel, aluminum, cement, but also the production of photovoltaic panels and components - a sector that in recent years has become the "backbone" of the green transition. This is where the voice of the industry matters. Smart Solar also commented that the EC's decision should be seen not so much as a retreat from green goals, but as a rational step to stabilize the sector.
