Effective management of power distribution networks requires the timely detection of faults that do not always trigger protection systems or cause an immediate power outage. “To support the diagnostics and maintenance of medium-voltage (MV) networks, Megger has developed Megger Grid Analytics (MGA) – a system that combines intelligent sensors, communication equipment and software for data collection and analysis. The solution provides insights into the condition of power distribution infrastructure and helps detect and locate faults. Its configuration is tailored to the characteristics of the specific network, measurement tasks and communication requirements for integration with existing control systems,” Megger representatives told BalkanEngineer.com.

Megger Grid Analytics collects data from the power distribution network and processes it using specialised software. The information can be used to identify sections of the network at increased risk of failure, track power flows and monitor power quality parameters in real time.
“More accurate fault location can reduce the time required to identify the fault location and restore power supply. This has an impact on the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), which measures the average duration of power supply interruptions experienced by a customer over a given period,” Megger explained.
The system can be integrated with Distribution Management Systems (DMS), SCADA infrastructures and Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS). This enables sensor data to be used alongside information from other monitoring and control systems. To protect the information exchanged, communications can be encrypted using SSL/TLS technologies.
