Turkish company Fortis Energy has received official permission to integrate a large-scale energy storage system (ESS) into its Nocaj 1 solar park located in Sremska Mitrovica, BalkanEngineer.com learned from eKapija. The project involves the installation of batteries with a capacity of 36 MWh, which will operate in sync with the 90-megawatt solar power plant. This move will give the facility a hybrid character, which is an extremely important step towards stabilizing the power grid in Serbia. The actual installation of the equipment is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026.

To implement the project, investor Fortis Renewable Energy has partnered with technology giant Kontrolmatik Technologies. The contract covers the entire design and construction of the plant (EPC), with specific battery solutions to be supplied by Pomega Energy Storage, a specialized subsidiary of Kontrolmatik. An important step in the preparation process is the approval already received for connection to the grid with a total capacity of 180 MW, which guarantees the smooth supply of clean energy to consumers.
The investment in Nocaj 1 is only the first phase of Fortis Energy's ambitious plan in the region, which includes the construction of solar facilities with a total capacity of 270 MW. These are expected to enable the storage of electricity generated by the sun and its use during peak hours, reducing dependence on traditional power plants and increasing the flexibility of the entire energy system in the Balkans.
