Romanian nuclear energy has reached a turning point in its development, as the small modular reactor (SMR) project in Doițești enters the final stage before its actual implementation. At the request of the majority shareholder, the Ministry of Energy, the final investment decision (FID) will be voted on at the upcoming General Shareholders' Meeting on February 12, 2026. This act effectively paves the way for the construction of the first facility of its kind in the region, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Ziarul Financiar.

The ambitious project envisages the installation of six modules using American NuScale technology, each with a capacity of 77 MW. With a total capacity of 462 MW, the new facility is designed to provide the necessary flexibility to the energy system by balancing the variable production from renewable sources. Nuclearelectrica CEO Cosmin Gita emphasizes that converting closed coal-fired power plants into modern nuclear sites is a strategic alternative for profitable reindustrialization and the development of a new chain of local suppliers.
The market reacted with increased optimism to these plans, with the company's capitalization on the Bucharest Stock Exchange rising by 24% since the beginning of the year, reaching a value of over 20 billion lei (4 billion euros). In addition to clean energy, the project in Doițești also focuses on the creation of a specialized know-how center to train the next generation of nuclear engineers in Southeast Europe. With this, Romania is making a serious bid for leadership in the implementation of advanced nuclear technologies that will dictate the pace of decarbonization on the continent.
