Rețele Electrice România, part of the PPC Group, is launching a large-scale modernization of the “Cetate” substation in Timișoara, Romania. The investment is worth 123.49 million lei, or nearly 23.5 million euros, and will increase the capacity of the facility, which currently supplies power to over 25,000 customers in the city center, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the company.

A third power transformer with a capacity of 40 MVA will be installed at “Cetate,” joining the two existing units. The substation currently has a total capacity of 65 MVA, and the expansion will provide additional reserve capacity for powering the city’s central districts. If load redistribution is necessary, it will also be able to support neighboring substations, at which point its coverage will reach approximately 51,000 customers.

A significant portion of the investment will go toward replacing equipment. Plans call for the modernization of high- and medium-voltage facilities, protection systems, and control and automation systems. The work will also cover the substation’s auxiliary systems, enabling the operator to have better control over the network’s status and load. Approximately 65.1 million lei of the investment has been secured through European funding under the Sustainable Development and Just Transition Program, while the remaining funds will be provided by Rețele Electrice România.
