Power transformers are among the most important components in electrical energy infrastructures. During their entire exploitation life, they are put under multiple effects, which can compromise their reliability and lead to serious problems. If defects are not found in time, there is a risk of emergencies, unplanned stops of the power supply and significant financial losses. "Megger’s ICMobserver and InsuLogix® G2 stand out among proven diagnostic solutions. ICMobserver provides continuous partial discharge monitoring and early detection of defects in the insulation system, while InsuLogix® G2 performs online DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) for gases and moisture in transformer oil. The combined usage of both technologies offers a comprehensive diagnostic overview of the transformer's condition and supports the implementation of maintenance strategies based on the equipment's actual state," Megger representatives explained to BalkanEngineer.com.

DGA monitoring allows for early detection of characteristic gas markers, including acetylene (C₂H₂) and hydrogen (H₂), which are indicators of progressing electrical and thermal faults in the transformer. The monitoring of partial discharge (PD) compliments DGA diagnostics by discovering defects in zones, that are not in contact with the transformer oil. This includes high-voltage insulators, on-load tap changers (OLTC), cable connections, and other critical components of the electrical system.
The monitoring systems ensure continuous remote monitoring and access to data in real time regarding the technical condition of the equipment. The integrated alarm functions can be connected to SCADA systems for dispatcher control and collecting data, which allows for preventative measures. The result is a significant reduction in unplanned downtime, enhanced operational safety, and optimized maintenance and repair costs.
