New facility in the Anatolian province of Konya produces electricity from waste and is managed by municipal authorities, according to a press release distributed by Mr. Tahir Akyyurek, Mayor of Turkish city of Konya. Electricity is produced by burning landfill gas methane generated by the landfill for municipal solid waste. 2859 m3/h of waste are burned in generating installation. The four units of the power plant have the capacity to meet the electrical needs of 26 000 households.

The installed capacity of the plant is 5.6 MW. In the past year, the facility produced 43 GWh of electricity. The generated heat is used in greenhouses to which is fed through a system of heat exchangers. The city also informed that in the future they will continue to develop techniques for the protection of environment.

Household waste stored in accordance with approved health standards are subject to fermentation processes in anaerobic environment in the time during which they release significant amounts of landfill gas (methane). It is being collected, conditioned and burned in gas engines that produce electricity. In Turkey successfully operate a large number of such facilities, situated mainly around Ankara and Istanbul.
