Construction has begun on a new 300 MWh energy storage battery park in the industrial zone of the town of Tvarditsa, Bulgaria. The project is being carried out in partnership with the Bulgarian companies Asarel-Trade and Power Profit and the American company Tesla, whose Megapack 2XL technology will be used in the facility. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 20, 2026, and commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, BalkanEngineer.com learned from an official statement by the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria.

The future facility will be a five-hour energy storage system equipped with 80 Tesla Megapack 2XL battery units and 20 transformers, each with a capacity of 4.4 MVA. The facility will enable the storage of electricity during periods of high generation and its subsequent delivery to the power grid based on demand. The necessary electrical infrastructure will be built, the equipment installed, and the system connected to the grid.

The investment in Tvarditsa is the first of three planned energy storage systems to be implemented in partnership between Asarel-Trade, Power Profit, and Tesla. Their total capacity will exceed 2,300 MWh, and the investment program is valued at over 350 million euros. The announced amount covers all three projects; a separate figure for the facility in Tvarditsa has not been specified.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the investors, Tesla, and Bulgarian institutions. According to the information presented, the new system will help balance the power grid and integrate electricity generated from renewable sources. Upon completion of construction, the Tvarditsa facility will be the first project completed under the joint investment program, with the other two systems still to be built.
