Romania has taken an important step towards establishing itself as a technology hub in the Balkans with the opening of its first national artificial intelligence (AI) factory, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from a publication by Romania-Insider. The new infrastructure, called RO AI Factory, is part of the European initiative EuroHPC – AI Factories, which brings together a number of countries in the construction of a network of centers for high-performance computing and AI technologies. In addition to Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain are also participating in the latest wave of projects, with each country developing its own infrastructure integrated into the pan-European platform.

The project is being implemented under the leadership of the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI Bucharest) and the National University of Science and Technology "Polytechnica" Bucharest, in partnership with leading academic, research, and industrial organizations. The goal is to create a modern supercomputing infrastructure optimized for artificial intelligence applications that will serve scientific and educational institutions as well as businesses and the public sector.
RO AI Factory will provide access to high-performance computing power, a large data set, software tools, and specialized training programs. The platform is expected to support the accelerated development of innovation in important sectors such as manufacturing, industry, life sciences, cybersecurity, digital public services, and autonomous systems.
ICI Bucharest Director Adrian-Victor Vevera emphasized the enormous importance of the project, stating that the factory will become a fundamental element of future European infrastructure initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence. According to him, the new platform will pave the way for significant investments, cross-border cooperation, and active participation of Romanian institutions and companies in the European technology ecosystem.
