The project for a new airport near Bucharest is progressing rapidly, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from an announcement by the mayor of Sector 4 in the Romanian capital, Daniel Balca. Preliminary feasibility studies for the Bucharest-Sud airport have been completed, and they indicate that the new facility will be built within a few years.

According to the mayor, the airport's location will be only 30 minutes' drive from the Bulgarian border, making it extremely convenient for travellers to and from Bulgaria. The project has been under consideration since 1973 and after many years of planning, the construction of the airport now seems certain.

According to estimates, its cost will amount to around EUR 2 billion. Bulza clarified that the projects are currently moving into the working phase. Despite the progress, the mayor pointed out that the project could take another seven to eight years to complete, which is in light of the slow nature of such infrastructure ventures.

The new airport will play an important role not only for Romania but also for Bulgaria. With its strategic location, just 24 km from Bucharest and 43 km from the Bulgarian border, the airport will be key to the regional transport network. The facility is expected to handle over 11 million passengers per year and has the capacity to expand to 20 million passengers and will also handle around 30 000 t. of cargo on an annual basis.
