Bulgaria has officially joined the group of more than 60 countries worldwide that offer specialized visas for so-called digital nomads, with the procedure coming into effect at the end of December 2025. The new regime allows foreign specialists to stay in the country for a period of one year with an option to extend for another twelve months. The initiative, backed by the Bulgarian Entrepreneurs Association (BESCO), is aimed primarily at experts in the technology and creative sectors, owners of international companies, and freelancers who practice remote professions, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Economy.bg.

To take advantage of the right of residence, applicants must prove that they work for an employer outside the European Union and the European Economic Area or run their own business registered abroad. An important requirement is also the availability of an annual income for the previous year that is not less than 50 gross minimum monthly wages for Bulgaria. In addition to financial security, digital nomads must provide proof of secure housing, medical insurance, and a criminal record certificate, with the explicit mention that they are not entitled to take up jobs in local Bulgarian companies.
The application process is structured in two stages, starting with obtaining a D visa at a Bulgarian embassy abroad and ending with the issuance of a residence permit and ID card within 14 days of arrival in the country. The regime also provides opportunities for family reunification, making Bulgaria an even more competitive destination on the global map for shared residence.
According to preliminary estimates, the new visa policy has the potential to generate up to BGN 30 million per year for the country, supporting the development of an innovative ecosystem and attracting a highly skilled community of professionals.
