PepsiCo has opened a $33.5 million automated warehouse at its snack factory in Popești-Leordeni, Romania, BalkanEnigneer.com has learned from Foodbev.com. The facility is part of a $100 million investment project announced in 2022 that includes three production lines increasing the factory's annual capacity to 39,000 t. Thus, the production complex serves 17 countries in Central and South-Eastern Europe.
The 32,560 m² warehouse is 54 m high and has a capacity of 23,500 pallets, handling 320 pallets per hour. Radu Berevoescu, general manager of PepsiCo Romania, highlighted the facility's role in centralizing operations, improving inventory control and reducing emissions and costs.
Powered by a 700kWp photovoltaic system, the logistics facility aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 500t per year and eliminate over 9,000 transfer trucks per year, reducing the carbon footprint of a stored pallet by a factor of five.
