The electric Citroën C3 is now in production at the Stellantis plant in Kragujevac, Serbia

16 may 2025

Stellantis, the world's fourth largest automaker, has announced the start of series production of the all-electric Citroën C3 at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) plant in Kragujevac, Serbia. The move is part of the group's broader strategy to expand production of affordable electric vehicles in Central and Eastern Europe, BalkanEngieer.com has learned from the announcement.

The new generation C3, designed with affordable electric mobility in mind, is now also being produced in Tarnava, Slovakia. Serbia will play a strategic role in expanding the volumes needed to meet strong market demand. Since the model's market debut in the last quarter of 2024, more than 130,000 orders have been received, with 30% of them for the electric version. The C3 is already the second best-selling electric car in France and the third best-selling car in the overall French and Italian car markets at the end of the first quarter of 2025.

The project in Kragujevac was made possible following the signing in 2022 of an agreement between Stellantis and the Serbian government for a joint investment of €190 million. The European Investment Bank (EIB Global) granted a loan of EUR 73 million for the adaptation of the plant to the production of electric vehicles. The new production lines, opened in July 2024, are fully automated and robotic, highlighting the high-tech.

Kragujevac has been a well-known automotive centre since the production of the Zastava and Fiat 500L. The modernisation of the plant includes the introduction of the new Smart Car platform, on which the new C3 is built. The platform allows different versions - petrol, hybrid and electric - to be easily produced from the same production capacity. It is expected to be used for other models in the Citroën range, including the C3 Aircross.
