In an effort to transform Northern Albania into a world-class tourist destination, the Albanian government has officially approved the ambitious “Gateway to the Alps” project, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the Albanian Telegraph Agency (ATA). The project is one of the largest in the region’s modern history and calls for a radical modernization of the infrastructure. The plan includes the construction of a new entrance boulevard to Shkodra, the rehabilitation of the shoreline of Lake Shkodra and the Buna River, as well as the creation of modern park spaces and pedestrian zones. “Gateway to the Alps” also serves as a strategic economic tool to connect the city with the mountain ranges of the North, facilitating access to the unique natural features of the Albanian Alps.

Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that this project will give a new boost to the local economy by stimulating entrepreneurship in the hospitality and service sectors. The design of the new facilities will follow the principles of sustainable development, combining Shkodra’s traditional architecture with innovative eco-friendly solutions. With the completion of this “gateway,” Albania aims to position itself as a leading hub for adventure and cultural tourism in the Balkans, attracting investors and visitors from across Europe.
