At the end of October, the "most expensive road infrastructure contract in Romania" was signed, BalkanEngineer.eu has learned from a mediafax.ro article. "With a value of 6.62 billion lei (1.33 billion euros excluding VAT), this contract also includes the construction of the 2.89 km long Meses tunnel, which will be the longest motorway tunnel in Romania," wrote Romania's Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Facebook.
The contract was won by a consortium of Turkish companies. The companies have been given a total of 78 months to complete the project - 18 months for design and 60 months for implementation. The project envisages the construction of the 41-kilometre Poarta Sălajului-Zalău and Zalău-Nuşfalău sections of the Transylvania Motorway, which will contribute to improving road infrastructure in the region.
Currently, Romania has only one highway tunnel with a length of 340 m, located on the A1 highway, in the Sibiu-Orăștie section, the material states. As part of its ambitious programme to develop road infrastructure across the country, Romania plans to build at least 70 highway tunnels over the next 10-20 years. This includes the current officially approved plans, with more projects expected to be added in the future.
