Romania and Bulgaria will cooperate on the construction of “Turnu Măgurele – Nikopol” hydrotechnical complex. The project, aimed at the optimum utilization of the Danube River’s hydropower potential, will be implemented by the Romanian company Hidroelectrica together with the Bulgarian National Electric Company (NEK), BalkanEngineer.com learned from a NEK’s announcement.
The project is in the List of Cross-border renewable energy projects (CEF Energy) of the European Union (EU), which is to be finally approved and published in the EU’s Official Journal. The hydrotechnical complex will include the construction of two small hydro power plants using state-of-the-art technologies, as well as a large-capacity storage tank.
The implementation of the project supports the joint commitment of Romania and Bulgaria for accelerated achievement of EU’s goals in the field of sustainable energy and should serve as a model for international cooperation in the field of sustainable infrastructure. Additional benefits of the initiative are expected to be the setting up of road transport, rail and energy connectivity, as well as improved conditions for navigability and flood prevention.
The project is among the three approved for the whole of Europe in 2024. An application for the feasibility studies’ funding from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) is pending.
