Wetland Park in Shkodra, Albania, has won a tender worth 4.2 million euros to implement a project to increase the region's tourism offer, which includes activities to regulate water flows, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from monitor.al. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced the winner, FUSHA sh.pk, which will implement the project through the Albanian Development Fund.
The project, part of the EBRD's initiatives for infrastructure improvements in tourist areas, will affect the entrance to Lake Shkodra and includes infrastructure strengthening. Wetland Park is located to the north of the city and will function as a green area with ecological and recreational functions, as a protected area for the lake's wetlands, and as a recreational area for residents.
This green buffer zone is of strategic importance for Shkodra as it is the first project in Albania adapted for climate change and regulating water flows. Wetland Park also has the potential to become a model for sustainable urban development, offering long-term protection for the lake ecosystem.
