The Turkish engineering and construction company Arbiogaz has started the construction of a 53 million euro wastewater treatment plant in Niš, the third-largest city in Serbia, BalkanEngineer.com learned from SeeNews.com.
The wastewater treatment plant is part of a larger project for wastewater management in the city, which includes the construction of 60 km of new sewer collectors, valued at 32 million euros. The sewer network will be built by the Serbian construction company Jedinstvo.
The entire project, which will treat the wastewater for 286 000 people, is funded by the European Union.
The treatment plant, which will cover an area of 15 hectares, is expected to be completed by 2026, while work on the sewer network has already begun.
According to the latest Eurostat data, in 2022, 16.44% of Serbia's population was connected to wastewater treatment plants.
