North Macedonia's state-owned energy company Elektrani (ESM) said it is considering the option of bringing in a private partner to manage Unit 1 of the REC Bitola coal-fired power plant, which needs to be upgraded to remain operational. BalkanEngineer.com has learned this from SeeNews.com.
ECM has signed a 5.1 million denar ($90,287/82,830 euro) deal with Croatia's PricewaterhouseCoopers Savjet to carry out a feasibility study for the continued operation of Unit 1 of REC Bitola.
The Government of North Macedonia originally planned to close the Bitola REC by 2027 as part of its commitment to phase out coal-fired power generation, but due to the energy crisis the closure date has been pushed back to 2028 or later. Unit 1 must be upgraded to continue operations until at least 2025.
According to ECM, REC Bitola has three units with a capacity of 233 MW each and generates over 72% of the total power generation in North Macedonia.
