Energy giant Shell plans to invest a total of 7 billion euros in the construction of infrastructure for oil extraction and processing in the region of Spirag in Albania, BalkanEngineer.com was informed by Money.bg. During a press conference on the subject, the country's Prime Minister Edi Rama said that preliminary analysis shows that the oil discovered in the region of Spirag is of high quality.

If production possibilities are confirmed, this could change the energy map of the Western Balkans. According to various data, Albania has proven oil reserves of between 120 and 165 million barrels and around 6 billion cubic metres of natural gas. This places it among the global top 60 producers. The largest oil field produced in the country is Patos-Marinza, which is also among the largest in continental Europe.

Albania mainly exports crude oil and imports fuels, and has two larger old refineries and a newer one with less capacity. Shell's investment will include the construction of infrastructure to store and separate the gas, oil and sulphur produced from the field, with more details to be provided once the results of underground pressure stability tests are received.

Final testing will begin in October and will last for three months. According to Shell, the presence of oil in the Shpirag area was confirmed in 2013 by the Shpirag-2 survey, which demonstrated the presence of a column of light oil of at least 800m. A final assessment of the exact extent of the field will be completed by the end of the year, which will determine whether it will be developed.

Shell Upstream Albania, which will be responsible for the investment, is a subsidiary of UK-based Royal Dutch Shell.
