Chinese double-decker electric trains will soon run on Serbia's railway network, BalkanEnigneer.com has learned from SeeNews.com. The country has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese company CRRC (Changchun Railway Vehicles) for the purchase of nine electric trains that will renew the fleet of the state railway operator Srbija Voz.

Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic announced that the contract is for trains with a speed of 120 km/h and that the country is ready to use China's rich experience in the transport sector to improve the railway industry in Serbia. The trains will be adapted to all EU standards and their delivery should be completed by 31 December 2026.

According to the Serbian government, the new trains will serve the future railway sections connecting the central district of Belgrade "Zemun" with the international airport "Nikola Tesla" and the future national stadium. It will be built in Surcin, a western municipality of Belgrade, and is expected to be completed by December 1, 2026, as it will be part of the EXPO 2027 complex and host the UEFA Europa League final in 2028.

The protocol for the deal on the new trains was signed during the two-day visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Serbia on May 7 and 8 this year.
