The Serbian government plans to work with Chinese firms Shanghai Fengling Renewable and Zidjin Mining Group to develop a renewable hybrid solar and wind power plant with a capacity of at least 1.5 GW, aiming to produce 30,000 t of renewable hydrogen per year, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from icis.com.

China's Shanghai Fengling Renewables is interested in investing in renewable energy capacity and storage capacity in Serbia, especially in renewable hydrogen production, and strategic partners for Serbia Zidjin Mining Group are considering the hybrid power plant to be built in Borski County, eastern Serbia.

The ministry revealed that investments of around €2 billion are planned in the development and construction of infrastructure of wind and solar power plants, energy storage for hydrogen production and technology for hydrogen fuel power generation. The plan is to provide a power generation capacity of 1.5 GW, which could potentially be expanded to 2 GW.

According to Serbia's energy plan, announced in July, the country aims to increase the share of renewables in electricity generation to 45%, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. The country currently has almost 400 MW of wind power and 52 MW of solar capacity, according to data from grid operator EMS. Serbia also has 4.4 GW of coal-fired power, with coal and gas-fired units accounting for 75% of the country's energy mix, data show.
