Romanian manufacturer Softronic recently announced that it will supply locomotives to Sweden, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Romania-insider.com. Four new TransMontana locomotives manufactured in Craiova, Romania, are scheduled to be shipped to Swedish state rail operator Green Cargo by the end of 2023.
The deal with Green Cargo is not the only one for the Romanian manufacturer. DB Cargo Romania, a subsidiary of Germany's Deutsche Bahn, recently purchased two more new TransMontana locomotives from Romanian manufacturer Softronic, further cementing its status as one of the company's most significant customers. The first locomotive was delivered at the end of December 2023 and the second is due to follow by the end of April 2024. DB Cargo will thus have 27 new locomotives acquired over approximately 10 years from Softronic.
Deutsche Bahn Cargo Romania has been active on the local market since 2000. In 2023, the company exceeded the threshold of 30 electric locomotives operated nationwide with the addition of the LEMA 072 locomotive to its rolling stock at the end of March. This was followed by LEMA 073, which entered service in the second half of April.
Softronic locomotives are currently operating on railways in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Sweden. Last year the factory produced 11 locomotives for private operators, up from 10 the previous year.
