A zero-carbon GridStar Flow battery factory using Lockheed Martin's innovative technology will be built in Oradea, Romania, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from thediplomat.ro. The project is the result of an agreement between the US giant and the Romanian company Sinteza, signed in the presence of Romania's Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja and the US ambassador to the country. The plant, which will begin operations in the summer of 2026, will be the first of its kind in Europe and the largest in the world.
The investment amounts to 50 million euros and includes the production of 30 000 t of electrolyte per year, a key component for GridStar Flow batteries used in large-scale power systems. The project has received support from Romania's National Recovery and Sustainability Plan, which has provided 25 million euros in co-financing. The Energy Minister underlined the importance of this venture, noting that Romania will become a strategic player in the European Union for the development of renewable energy projects.
Lockheed Martin Vice President Ray Piselli said the project will make Romania a regional leader in energy efficiency and security by supporting "zero emissions" goals. Sinteza CEO Gelu Stan added that the project represents an important step towards technological modernisation and the transition to green energy, ensuring an ethical and sustainable investment in Europe's energy future.
