The more than 7 billion dollar project to build new reactors at Romania's Cernavoda nuclear power plant is moving forward and is expected to create 19 000 jobs in the nuclear industry, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from mediafax.ro. Construction of the new units 3 and 4 is scheduled for completion in 2032, an ambitious target given that Romania has not made a major energy investment in 30 years.
Nuclearelectrica, the operator of the Cernavoda plant, has announced the addition of important items to the agenda for the forthcoming General Meeting of Shareholders on 14 November. The main item includes the approval of the contract for the construction of the new units between the project company EnergoNuclear and an international consortium of leading companies in the energy sector.
"After decades of waiting, we are putting this strategic project on a path of no return and in 2031-2032 we will have two new nuclear reactors in Cernavoda," Energy Minister Sebastian Sebastian Bourduia said, underlining the importance of this project for Romania's economy and energy independence.
