Orange Romania Group, one of the largest providers of broadband internet and mobile services, has signed its first vPPA (virtual power purchase agreement) with Engie Romania, a major energy supplier in the country, which consists in the virtual purchase of long-term renewable energy, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Thediplomat.ro. Through the 6-year agreement, Orange Romania will cover 30 GWh of its annual electricity needs with green energy from solar technologies.
With the signing of the vPPA, Orange and Engie Romania will partner in a joint project that supports Orange companies in Romania to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, a goal set by Orange Group's strategic plan, Lead the Future. Through this initiative, Romania joins the other countries in the Europe7 perimeter, where Orange has secured a solid 80% green energy in 2023. Other countries include Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Poland and Moldova.
A virtual PPA (vPPA) is a long-term contract signed between a renewable energy developer and an interested buyer. This approach covers future commercial risks related to price fluctuations on the energy market (hedging) and at the same time guarantees (by transferring certificates of guarantee of origin from the developer) that the energy provided to the buyer comes from renewable sources.
