The company managing the international airport in Tirana, Tirana International Airport (TIA), plans to increase the area of the airport terminal to 40 000 m2, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Kapitali.al. During the first 8 months of 2024, the operator registered over 7 million passengers.
Currently, Rinas terminal in Tirana occupies an area of approximately 14 500 m2, which means that its size will triple in order to cope with the ever-increasing flow of passengers using the airport. The company TIA expects the number of travelers to exceed 10 million by the end of this year. In 2023, the airport in Tirana served 7.26 million passengers, which is 40% more compared to 2022.
TIA’s major investment plan will include expanding various parts of the airport, including runways, parking lots and taxiways. By 2040, the operator intends to invest a total of 140 million euro, which will also finance the construction of a new runway for the introduction of intercontinental flights, including to the USA.
