OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy company in Southeast Europe, has signed an agreement to purchase a 50% stake in Respiră Verde, a Romanian company and local leader in used cooking oil collection. BalkanEngieer.com has learned this from OMV's official website. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2024, subject to certain conditions, including the approval of the Competition Council and the Foreign Direct Investment Review Commission.
Used cooking oil is one of the main renewable feedstocks for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodiesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil - HVO1), resulting in reduced carbon emissions in the transport sector. By using SAF, CO2 emissions from commercial flights are approximately 80% lower than conventional fuel.
Founded 12 years ago, Respiră Verde collects up to 10,000 t of used cooking oil per year from companies active in sectors such as hospitality (hotels, restaurants) and retail. Respiră Verde has its own transport fleet and operates two main warehouses in Bihor and Ialomica. The company aims to expand into other European markets in the near future.
