Norway-based renewable energy company Statkraft has launched a preliminary feasibility study for a pioneering pumped-storage hydroelectric plant (SHP) project in Albania, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from BalkanGreennews.com. The initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening Albania's energy infrastructure and increasing its capacity to manage fluctuating energy demand.
Albania relies heavily on hydroelectric power, which accounts for almost all of its domestic electricity generation. However, the country lacks pumped-storage hydropower plants. This is why Statkraft sees a significant investment opportunity in creating the first such system in Albania, using the reservoir of the existing Moglica hydroelectric plant.
The PAVETC project, named RP Moglica Shtesë, involves the construction of an upper reservoir that will be located 8 km east of the current Moglica Dam, which has a capacity of 380 million m3. The height difference between the upper reservoir and the turbines will be 620 meters.
The implementation of the project depends on the results of Statkraft's preliminary study, and if they are positive, the facility will be completed in 2030.
