North Macedonia plans to build solar power plants in its industrial zones through public-private partnerships, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Balkangreennews.com. This initiative, supported by the Directorate for Technological-Industrial Development Zones (DTIRZ), is strategically aimed at meeting the changing needs of manufacturers, especially those exporting to the European Union (EU).
As the European Union (EU) is set to introduce the Carbon Cap Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026, the imperative for non-EU producers to adopt cleaner energy sources to maintain competitiveness is becoming increasingly apparent. In line with this global trajectory, North Macedonia is undertaking a series of strategic initiatives to harness solar energy for the benefit of industry. Key among them is the 10 MW solar power plant project in the Tetovo area, led by Normak Investment, a joint venture of Norwegian companies. The recent acquisition of a license for trial operation marks a key step in the country's agenda, signaling readiness for producers to source clean energy.
In addition, TIRZ signed a deal for 6.7 million euros with construction company Zobek Mining for the preparation of sites for solar power plants. They are in the areas of Skopje 1, Skopje 2, Shtip, Strumica, Prilep and Struga.
In addition to electricity generation, solar energy initiatives in North Macedonia encompass wider ecosystem development, including a green energy zone in the Tetovo complex and upcoming projects such as the solar panel factory by PiKCELL Group in collaboration with German company AE Solar.
