The telecommunications company Makedonski Telekom had installed the first underwater optical cable in North Macedonia, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the company’s press release. The 1 km long cable is laid in Lake Debar, which is located near the border with Albania.
Through the new optical cable, Makedonski Telekom aims to improve the existing network infrastructure over an area of 6.32 km2 in the region. This will also provide opportunities to connect more points and base stations to the operator’s optical network. From Makedonski Telekom’s press release, it is clear that the company would continue to explore ways to use the water basins in North Macedonia for the installation of underwater optical cables in the future.
