Chinese company Zijin Mining Group has invested $2.5 billion (€2.3 billion) in its copper mining facilities in Serbia over the past five years, nearly doubling the initial $1.26 billion pledged in 2018, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from SeeNews.com . The amount also includes $300 million invested in improving the environment by reducing sulfur dioxide emissions and treating industrial wastewater.
Zijin's Serbian operations employ around 7,500 people, with more team expansion planned in the near future. The company aims to double its annual production of copper and gold in Serbia over the next five years, aiming to reach 450,000 t of copper and 10 t of gold. This would position Serbia as a leading European copper producer.
Zijin's Serbian division has produced 240,000 t of copper and 7.5 t of gold in 2023. The company currently operates four copper mines and a smelter in the Bor region, using advanced technologies for future growth.
