The European Commission will provide Albania with a €62 million ($67 million) grant to build a railway section linking the coastal Adriatic city of Drach with the central city of Rogozhin, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from SeeNews.com.

The total investment cost for the railway section, which is part of the pan-European Corridor VIII linking the Adriatic Sea with the Black Sea, is expected to amount to 120.5 million euros. In 2020, the European Union provided a grant of €2.42 million for technical assistance during the feasibility and design phase of the project.

The project for the railway section Drač - Rogozhine is part of a larger EU-funded project for the construction of the railway line: Drač - Pogradec - Linn - North Macedonia border along Corridor VIII. The total cost of this inter-municipal line is estimated at € 291 million, co-financed by the Albanian government with a contribution of € 25 million and € 125 million from other unspecified sources.

Corridor VIII is a route stretching some 1500 km from the port of Drach in the west to the Bulgarian ports of Varna and Burgas in the east.
