The economy of North Macedonia showed growth in the first quarter of 2024, with an estimated annual increase of 1.2%, BalkanEnigneer.com has learned from SeeNews.com. This growth follows a rise of 0.9% in the previous quarter, according to data published by the country's statistics office, Makstat.
In the period January-March 2024, the gross domestic product (GDP) of North Macedonia amounts to 199.7 billion denars, which is equal to 3.2 billion euros at the current exchange rate. At the same time, the country recorded a decline in export activity. Exports of goods and services decreased by 6% on an annual basis in nominal terms. In contrast, imports registered a slight increase, increasing by 0.5% over the same period.
One of the main drivers of the economy this quarter was household final consumption, which grew by approximately 4.8% year-on-year. This category constitutes a significant share of 72.0% of the GDP structure, which highlights the importance of domestic consumption in the overall economic landscape.
The statistics office has yet to release comprehensive economic growth data for the whole of 2023, which will provide further context and understanding of the country's economic trajectory.
