The energy ministers of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania met in Athens, where they signed a tripartite declaration of intent to develop a series of renewable energy initiatives in the region, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from BTA. This key milestone has emerged as a step towards achieving a just transition to a decarbonised and climate-neutral economy.

The declaration foresees cooperation between the three countries in preparing joint cross-border projects in offshore wind energy, hydrogen from renewable energy sources and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Bulgaria, Greece and Romania also commit to support a joint initiative to explore and develop the sustainable use of offshore wind potential in the Black Sea and Aegean.

One of the top priorities for Bulgaria is to develop, together with Romania, initial studies in the Black Sea, defining specific parameters for offshore energy zones. The inclusion of Greece in the initiative broadens the scope of the project and allows for the mapping of offshore wind potential in South East Europe.

The declaration also foresees the creation of a regional renewable hydrogen cluster where governments, transmission system operators and industry will participate with joint efforts. This cluster will develop projects to boost renewable energy and develop infrastructure for renewable hydrogen production.

Another important aspect of the Declaration is the development of cross-border charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. This stage is essential for the sustainable development of the region and the achievement of a low-emission transport system.
