The Albanian government aims to revive its dormant weapons manufacturing plants by partnering with foreign investors through public-private enterprises, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from SeeNews.com. The country's plans were announced by Defense Minister Nico Peleschi.
The government has already hosted several visits by foreign companies to the production complex in Polikan and the two defense equipment manufacturing plants near the towns of Elbasan and Gramsh. According to Peleshi, however, management has recently seen the need for a more structured approach to achieving the goal.
"Last year we decided to approach the revival of the arms industry in a more professional way by carrying out a re-evaluation in cooperation with the NATO Procurement Agency, NSPA and others, so that we have a better idea of what we have , and the value of the investment needed to resume production, as well as what the market demand is and what market forecasts we can make," commented the minister.
While the production complex in Polikan is completely non-functional, the two factories in Elbasan and Gramsh are operating only as weapons demilitarization facilities. The three facilities were built in 1962 and ceased operation after 1990.
