Mirela Kumbaro, Minister of Tourism of Albania, has announced an ambitious plan to expand the airport infrastructure in the country by 2030, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from BTA. By the end of this period, two more airports will be added to the existing ones in Tirana and Kukus.
At the moment, Albania has two main airports - in its capital, Tirana, and in the city of Kukus in the northeast. The plan calls for the addition of airports in the coastal city of Vlora, located in the southwestern part of the country, and in Girokastra, located in the southern part of Albania.
According to Minister Kumbaro's statement, Tirana's Mother Teresa International Airport will also start transoceanic flights by 2030. She emphasized that the new airport in Vlora will be the largest in the country and is expected to be opened in 2025 and start active operations in 2026.
The expansion of the aviation infrastructure aims to significantly ease road transport in the country, especially during the active summer season. In addition to the new airports, land transport projects for the Kardić-Delvina road and the Logara tunnel, which connect the cities in the southern part of Albania, are also underway and will be opened in the upcoming summer season. Investments in the ports of Durres and Saranda, as well as the marina in Orikum next to Vlora, also contribute to more sustainable tourism.
