The gas interconnector between Bulgaria and Serbia (IBS) was inaugurated on 10 December this year in the presence of the presidents of the two countries, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Energy.ec.europa.eu. It connects the gas transmission networks of the two countries, diversifying supply routes and improving regional market integration.
The completion of the gas interconnector is a major achievement of regional cooperation in the Central and Southeast European Energy Connectivity (CESEC) initiative and a key project in the current geopolitical context. An important factor is that this will open Serbia's gas market to gas sources outside Russia.
The pipeline from Novi Iskar (Bulgaria) to Niš (Serbia) via the Dimitrovgrad border crossing with a total length of approximately 170 km has been recognised under EU energy infrastructure rules as a project of common interest. It has received more than €83 million in EU funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), plus structural funds for the Bulgarian section and support from the EU Instrument for Pre-Accession for the Serbian section. Once completed, the gas interconnector will have an annual capacity of 1.8 billion cubic metres with the possibility of reverse flow.
