In the first five months of 2023, ICT services exports from Serbia reached EUR 1.3 billion, up 41% from last year, BalkanEnigineer.com has learned from Ekapija.com. Over the past seven years, the information and communication technology (ICT) sector has become one of the three key drivers for the development of the Serbian economy, and will now be supported by the Digital Europe programme.
Presenting the Digital Europe programme at the Science and Technology Park in Belgrade, the country's Prime Minister Ana Bernabic said that last year was a record year for exports of ICT services with a volume of €2.7 billion. She also pointed out that Serbia has a good chance to absorb a significant part of the €7.5 billion allocated by the European Union under the programme by 2027.
The programme, which will run until 2027, was initiated by the European Commission as a response to the need for economic recovery on the European continent. Funds will be made available for the areas of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, advanced digital skills, and the development and implementation of digital capacity and interoperability.
Eligible applicants are legal and natural persons based in Serbia, including non-profit associations, companies, NGOs, with a special focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. Academia, research organisations, accelerators and start-ups will also have the opportunity to apply for the programme.
