Albania is transforming its maritime infrastructure, prioritising plans for a new cargo port in Drač. The state has announced an upcoming tender for the project, scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Connectingregion.com. The port development is shaping up to be a significant leap forward in the country's logistics capabilities.

The Drach Port Authority (DPA) recently confirmed the issuance of a building permit for the initial phase of the project. The overall design, led by a consortium including Dutch engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV and Albanian consultancy Abkons, has been successfully completed, paving the way for the project to begin.

The site chosen for the new facility is the north-western part of Porto Romano in Drač and is in line with a wider vision to redefine the city's seascape. At the same time, the southern part of the existing port is earmarked for the construction of a €2 billion residential and maritime complex led by Emaar, a developer from the United Arab Emirates.

The significance of the new port extends beyond Albania's borders, as rail links are also planned to the so-called "dry" ports of Kosovo's capital Pristina and the city of Struga in northern Macedonia. These logistics locations play a crucial role in facilitating cargo handling, underlining Albania's commitment to strengthening regional trade and logistics networks.

The Albanian government has allocated 43 billion lek (approximately €412 million) from its 2024 budget for the project. A further Lek 26 billion is earmarked for 2025 and 2026, which is expected to be the completion date for the project.
