OMV Petrom – one of Romania's largest oil and gas groups – has announced plans to invest around €750 million in the construction of several sustainable fuel plants at its Petrobrazi refinery, located near the southern city of Ploiesti, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Capital.bg. This includes the construction of a plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and renewable diesel, as well as two plants for the production of green hydrogen.

The plant for the production of SAF and renewable diesel will require an investment of 560 million euros. as the new facility will allow OMV Petrom to supply around 250 kt of biofuels per year starting in 2028. This initiative will reduce Romania's dependency on biofuel imports by providing the local market with sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

The investment in the two green hydrogen installations is estimated at around 190 million euros, of which 50 million will be covered by European funds provided under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan (NRSP). With a total capacity of 55 MW, these plants will produce around 8 kt of green hydrogen per year. This will make the Petrobrazi refinery the first major producer of sustainable fuels in the region.

In addition, in May of this year OMV Petrom commissioned the largest crude oil storage tank in the country after an investment of more than 23 million euros, and in April the company began testing an innovative carbon dioxide capture and recovery plant at its Petrobrazi refinery.
