According to the Romanian government, the country is on track to become the first country with the latest, safest and cleanest nuclear technology. Prime Minister Nicolae-Yonel Chuka met with representatives of the US-based Fluor Corporation, the largest shareholder of NuScale Power, a developer of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. This was learned by BalkanEngineer.com from Balkangreenenergynews.com.
Nuclearelectrica and NuScale are jointly developing a project for the first SMR in Europe on the site of the former thermal power plant in Doicești, and in November 2021 the two companies signed an agreement to advance the deployment of NuScale's SMR technology in Romania by the end of the decade. Fluor is expected to coordinate engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).
Fluor is the first company to have an SMR facility design certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
