The current investment project for the new gas-fired power unit at Romania's Mintia power plant will be completed by the end of 2026, with the first stage ready in the summer of 2025, BalkanEngineer.com was informed by Romaniajournal.ro. The facility is expected to be 64% efficient, making it one of the most efficient power plants in Europe.
The project will create more than 1,200 jobs during its implementation, and once the new plant is operational, it will employ around 300 power workers.
The plant entered insolvency proceedings on 14 November 2019 and was placed in conservation in the summer of 2021 due to a lack of the necessary investment to bring it into compliance with EU environmental regulations.
Mass Global Energy Rom, part of Mass Group Holding, acquired the Mintia thermal power plant in August 2022 for €91.23 million excluding VAT in a public tender. The investment in the new gas-fired power plant is worth €1.3 billion and will provide significant support for Romania's green transition as it replaces coal with natural gas.
