Hydrosystem Strezhevo, the state-owned water management company in Northern Macedonia, has installed a 500 kW photovoltaic (PV) plant at its Strezhevo dam, BalkanEngieer.com has learned from Balcangreennews.com In the region, installing solar power plants on land near dams and similar water bodies is becoming more common and preferred.
Hydrosystem Strezhevo is responsible for the management of the Strezhevo dam, which provides water for irrigation in part of the Pelagonia region, for water supply to part of the municipality of Bitola and industry, and is responsible for flood control in this part of Northern Macedonia. The reservoir is also used to generate electricity.
The State Water Authority operates five small hydropower plants with a total capacity of 3,710 kW and an annual production of 12 GWh. The new 500 kW solar power plant will increase the company's electricity production by about 700 MWh.
According to the director of Hydrosystem Strezhevo, Metodije Gramatkovski, this is the first public company in North Macedonia to have built a photovoltaic power plant with its own funds, and the company has invested MKD 30,000,000 (about EUR 487,000) in the photovoltaic facility.
