AeroItalia, an Italian airline founded in 2022, recently announced that it has completed the acquisition of 93.86% of the Romanian regional company Air Connect. BalkanEnggineer.com has learned this from Romaniainsider.com. On its social networks, the Italian organization said that this acquisition will allow it to strengthen its presence in the Italian regional market and improve its relationship with its hub in Fiumicino, Italy.
In the summer of 2023, Gaetano Intrieri, CEO of AeroItalia, hinted in an interview that he wanted to buy the Romanian company Air Connect, which was inaugurated in March 2022. Representatives of Air Connect commented at the time that no takeover documents had been signed by AeroItalia, but explained that discussions had taken place about the sale of the company.
It is not yet possible to predict in what direction Air Connect will develop under the Aeroitalia umbrella. One of the main reasons for the takeover is the lower labour costs in Romania compared to Italy. In terms of route network development, it has long been observed that Aeroitalia is trying to focus on Italy-Romania traffic.
