A high-tech laboratory for space sciences has been officially opened at the Naval Academy in Varna, Bulgaria, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from BTA. The ceremony was attended by senior military and government officials, including Bulgaria's Minister of Innovation and Growth Milena Stoicheva and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mikhailov, as well as local government and business representatives.
The laboratory, equipped with the help of EnduroSat, represents a significant expansion of training opportunities in the field of space technology. The company's director, Raicho Raichev, noted that this is the first laboratory of its kind outside Sofia and up to 50 people can be trained in it at the same time.
The equipment includes a desktop satellite with all the necessary avionics and operational control software, allowing live data tracking. The lab will be used to train students for the new master's program at the VVMU in aerospace engineering and technology, which starts in October. EnduroSat also provided the Naval Academy with ground stations that can communicate with satellites in low-Earth orbit. The company is now also planning to hire international experts as lecturers for the master's programme.
Minister of Innovation and Growth Milena Stoycheva stressed the importance of the laboratory in the development of high technology in the country and the promotion of interaction between science and business. She noted that increasing the country's contribution to the European Space Agency will contribute to more active funding of similar projects in the future.
The establishment of such laboratories is part of the military's modernisation and development strategy, which also includes the expansion of technological capabilities in the field of space sciences.
