German logistics company Hapag-Lloyd has announced that it has opened its own offices in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and the northern port city of Varna in a bid to strengthen its customer service in the Black Sea region and the Balkans, BalkanEnigeer.com has learned from SeeNews.com.
The company chose to establish a direct physical presence in Bulgaria due to the country's strategic location, strong gross domestic product (GDP) growth projected for 2023 and 2024, and booming energy, commodities and agriculture sectors. The newly opened offices will employ 21 staff.
"Bulgaria is an attractive growth market for us with two major ports and good inland connections by land and rail," said Juan Pablo Richards, Hapag-Lloyd's senior managing director for Southern Europe.
In addition to energy, Bulgaria has strong positions in mining, metallurgy, engineering, agriculture and tourism, exporting seeds, food additives, medical equipment, tobacco, machinery, copper and zinc, according to the company. And major imports include machinery and appliances, solar equipment, bicycles and building materials.
Hapag-Lloyd now operates three sailings a week, linking the Bulgarian ports of Burgas and Varna with key locations in the Middle East, USA, Europe and Asia. The company also covers logistics operations in Central and Eastern European countries with trucks and trains from Bulgaria via the pan-European Rhine-Danube corridor.
